A reverse osmosis system, often called an RO system, is one of the most effective ways to filter your drinking water. It works by forcing water through a special semi-permeable membrane that blocks contaminants, minerals, and other impurities. What comes out on the other side is clean, purified water that tastes fresh and is ideal for drinking, cooking, and even coffee brewing.

Most RO systems are installed under your kitchen sink and include several stages of filtration. First, a sediment filter catches larger particles like dirt or rust. Then, a carbon filter removes chlorine and odors. Finally, the RO membrane strips out the microscopic stuff that other filters miss. Some systems even include a polishing filter at the end to give your water a crisp, clean finish.

Contaminants Removed by RO

One of the biggest reasons Auburn homeowners choose a reverse osmosis system is because of what it removes. RO systems are excellent at filtering out lead, nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, PFAS (also known as “forever chemicals”), chlorine, and even bacteria or viruses in some cases. This matters especially if your home uses well water or if you’re just not confident in the quality of your city water.

Local water quality can vary, and even treated water might still contain trace amounts of unwanted substances. If you’re concerned about your family’s exposure to chemicals or heavy metals, a reverse osmosis system provides peace of mind and significantly better tasting water.

RO Systems Compared to Other Water Filters

Carbon filters, like the ones in pitcher systems or refrigerator lines, are good at removing chlorine and improving taste. Whole-house filtration systems do a great job of treating all the water that flows through your home, removing sediment and basic contaminants. But reverse osmosis goes deeper.

An RO system provides a higher level of filtration, targeting contaminants that carbon filters can’t remove. That makes it an ideal addition to a whole-house system. While the whole-home filter improves water for bathing and laundry, the reverse osmosis system focuses on drinking water. Together, they give you the best of both worlds.

Maintenance and Service Needs

Reverse osmosis systems are relatively low maintenance, but they do need some attention to stay effective. You’ll typically need to replace the pre-filters and post-filters every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage and water quality. The RO membrane itself usually lasts about two to three years.

Some homeowners are comfortable handling these filter changes on their own, especially if they’re familiar with basic plumbing tasks. But if you’d rather not deal with it, Go With The Flo Plumbing is happy to take care of it for you. We offer routine maintenance and can also check your system’s pressure and flow rate to make sure everything is working like it should.

If you’re looking to improve the taste, safety, and quality of your drinking water, a reverse osmosis system might be the upgrade your home needs. Give us a call and we’ll walk you through the best options for your setup.
